Blood volume and red cell mass volume in intensive care patients

The hemoglobin concentration (and hematocrit) have a very variable relationship with blood volume parameters in critically ill patients, whose plasma volume tends to be low and fluctuating. Ideally, when widely applicable methods are available, blood volume measurement will become almost as frequent a request as 'full blood count' for monitoring intensive care patients and determining their blood transfusion requirements ( Wardrop.et al 1992).
