Primary insults are caused by external loading of the spine such as flexion, lateral flexion, extension, extension-rotation, tension, vertical compression, and shear stress. As a consequence, hemorrhage and rupture of ligaments and dislocation or fracture of vertebrae occurs, as well as contusion, laceration, and transection of neuronal or glial tissue. The most common cause of spinal cord injury is flexion, followed by compression and then extension. Spinal cord injuries most commonly involve the lower cervical spine and the thoracolumbar junction.
