Automated tests

The MIC and disk-diffusion methods require overnight incubation in addition to the 24 h usually required to isolate the organism. The obvious need for faster turn-round times in the care of critically ill patients led to commercial systems that produce susceptibility results in 3 to 7 h. Staphylococci, enterococci, and enteric Gram-negative bacilli can be tested by several commercially available systems that read and interpret results photometrically. These automated systems perform adequately in comparison with MIC results and can test between nine and 20 drugs at one time. However, they should be used with caution, and results for important isolates should be confirmed by conventional methods.
