Arterial ketone body ratio

The ratio of acetoacetate to 3-hydroxybutyrate in arterial blood has been proposed as an indicator of hepatic mitochondrial function and hepatic redox state ( Ozawa.et, al 1983). This test is being increasingly used as it is relatively simple and a dedicated spectrophotometer and diagnostic kit are available. Decreases in the ratio have been associated with increases in morbidity and mortality following hepatic surgery, and it is of prognostic value in patients with fulminant hepatic failure.
