Acute mountain sickness

The complete pathophysiological sequence of acute mountain sickness from the benign self-limiting form to the severe life-threatening illness with clinical signs of cerebral edema is unknown at present. It has been established that the severity of the symptoms of acute mountain sickness correlate with the degree of hypoxemia and that the symptoms resolve on application of pure oxygen. Three pathophysiological aspects have been identified as contributing to the development of acute mountain sickness.
