Therapy implications

The kinetics of tumour growth impinge on clinical management in various ways:

♦ Time to recurrence following treatment depends very much on the cellular re-population rate.

♦ The effectiveness of proliferation-dependent chemotherapeutic agents is limited by out-of-cycle cells, and therefore by a low growth fraction.

♦ Surviving tumour cells appear to accelerate after the start of radiation or cytotoxic drug treatment. To allow a gap in a course of therapy is therefore much more serious than delaying the start of therapy by the same period.

♦ Rapid tumour cell re-population provides a rationale for accelerated radiation therapy.
