Prognostic factors

Survival after a diagnosis of breast cancer is dependent upon:

♦ Eradication of the primary tumour

♦ Loco-regional disease, particularly axillary and/or internal mammary nodes

♦ Any systemic metastases

The latter determines the prognosis for the vast majority of women and is closely correlated with a number of recognized prognostic factors:

♦ Number of involved axillary nodes

♦ Oestrogen receptor status (ER)

The usefulness of other biological factors (c-erbB2, markers of angio-genesis, cathepsin D, etc.) is currently being explored.
