Novel radiotherapeutic approaches

Radiotherapy is an effective anti-cancer treatment modality. Increasing the dose delivered to the tumour while sparing the surrounding normal tissue will commonly improve local tumour control. Novel radio-therapeutic approaches aim to:

♦ Increase the dose delivered to tumours, by more effectively targeting the tumour volume (but not at the expense of normal tissue damage).

♦ Increase the biological effectiveness of radiation by affecting the radiosensitization of the tumour (but not of normal tissue).

♦ Use different forms of radiation which have improved biological effects.

♦ Use changed schedules of radiation delivery in order to increase the differential between tumour kill and normal tissue damage.
