Monitoring treatment

The primary tumour and any metastatic spread may be monitored by serial examination using the most appropriate technique. Such examinations allow measurement of tumour response to radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or other intervention. Recurrence of primary tumour after surgery can also be assessed by serial monitoring, though there may be difficulty in differentiating post-operative haematoma, fibrosis, and tumour. Modern techniques, including Gadolinium-enhanced MR, are becoming more reliable and specific.
