Dependence on others

The advanced technology of modern cancer treatment, as well as its potential dangers, renders patients extremely vulnerable and dependent on others. For many this loss of control is overwhelming and contributes significantly to psychological distress. This is especially true for adolescents who may already be struggling with the challenges of establishing their own identity. Helping these people and their families cope with the stresses of treatment for a life-threatening disease at such a crucial time in their development is a vital part of their care if normal social, intellectual, and personal growth is to be achieved.
