Conformal therapy

This multi-step technique uses 3D image reconstruction and treatment planning, combined with sophisticated treatment verification, to conform a high dose of radiotherapy to the target volume (often irregularly shaped) but maintain a low dose to the non-target tissues of the patients. The commercial development of multi-leaf collimators for linear accelerators and megavoltage imaging systems has made this treatment available in a number of large radiotherapy treatment centres. Early clinical results suggest that normal tissue side-effects can be reduced and dose escalation is possible e.g. in the treatment of localized prostate cancer.
