♦ Depletion of anatomical and physiological elements e.g. myelofibrosis, myelodysplasia
♦ Intrinsic stem cell/precursor cell failure e.g. aplastic anaemia, paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria
♦ Iatrogenic e.g. chemotherapy, irradiation
♦ Bone marrow infiltration e.g. malignancy
♦ Peripheral consumption e.g. hypersplenism
♦ Autoimmune diseases e.g. systemic lupus erythematosis
♦ Vitamin deficiency e.g. megaloblastic anaemia
