The ultimate goal of cardiac and pulmonary organ procurement is to facilitate storage of functional organs for transplantation at remote sites, and to ameliorate the obligatory ischemia-reperfusion injury. To this end, modifications of preservation perfusate ionic and macromolecular composition, temperature and delivery vehicles have been met with variable success both clinically and experimentally. The temporal restrictions upon cardiac and pulmonary transplantation, relative to other solid organ transplantation, highlights the ubiquity of this problem and gives direction for avenues of future research.
