Reasons For Discordance

Obviously, there will be pathways to suicide other than depression, and many other risk factors have been identified (e.g., Maris et al., 1992). But, why is depression without suicidal behaviour so common? Why is there not a higher incidence of suicidal behaviour in depression? One possibility is that it is necessary to have additional risk factors that add to the risk that depression carries. Or, it may be that those who are depressed but not at suicidal risk have certain protective factors which offset any depressive risk. A second possibility lies within the nature of the depressive experience itself: are there certain facets or features of depression that are particularly related to suicidality?
