Nonimmune treatments are also being tested against cryptococcosis. One such experimental treatment is the use of a naturally occurring antimicrobial peptide, killer peptide (KP), produced by Pichia anomala. KP binds to a common cell wall component - P1-3 glucan, and is active against many microorganisms. KP has in vitro effects against Cn including growth inhibition, reduced capsule size and increased susceptibility to macrophage and neutrophil killing. In vivo, KP treatment increases survival time of mice infected with Cn and reduces fungal CFU in the brain (Cenci et al., 2004). In addition, a surprising new drug treatment for Cn is the HIV protease inhibitor Indinavir. In vitro, indinavir inhibits some virulence characteristics, including capsule size. It also increases killing of Cn by phagocytic cells (Monari et al., 2005c). Furthermore, it can increase the survival time of mice infected with Cn (Pericolini et al., 2006).
