Neutrophils

Human polymorphonuclear neutrophils kill Cn through both oxidative (Chaturvedi et al., 1996; Aratani et al., 2006) and nonoxidative mechanisms (Mambula et al., 2000). Despite their ability to kill Cn, neutrophil influx into mouse tissues is not associated with protective responses to pulmonary Cn infection (Kawakami et al., 1999). Depletion of neutrophils before infection with Cn results in increased survival times in BALB/c mice (Mednick et al., 2003). However, a recent study found that C57Bl/6 mice deficient in myeloperoxidase (an enzyme important in the oxida-tive systems of neutrophils) show decreased survival times, increased fungal burden, and more severe pathology (Aratani et al., 2006). These apparently discordant results may be explained by the different mouse strains used in each study.
