Identification of zygomycetes and diagnosis of zygomycosis is notoriously difficult. Three main issues are of importance: the identification to the species level of a strain isolated in culture, the identification of a zygomycete as the etiologic agent of infection in tissues (either from fresh biopsy samples or from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded material), and the identification of a particular strain (i.e. typing of isolates within a given species). Recent advances have been made in these three areas, in particular with the availability and evaluation of new molecular approaches.
