Future Research

Many important questions remain unanswered regarding the host immune response to A. fumigatus infection. Are there additional host receptors that recognize A. fumigatus during infection? Are they found only on cells of the innate immune system? What are the main signaling pathways activated? What is the degree of cross talk between them? What are the molecular details of antigen presentation to T cells and how do they react? What are the relative contributions of the Th1 and Th2 responses to combating infection? Research at the interface between immunology and pathogen biology will no doubt help answer these questions in the coming years.
