Dendritic Cells

Dendritic cells (DC) inhibit growth or kill Cn through both oxidative and nonoxidative mechanisms (Kelly et al., 2005). In addition, DCs induce antigen-specific T cell activation in both mice (Wozniak et al., 2006) and humans (Syme et al., 2002; Mansour et al., 2006). Human DCs phagocytose (or pinocytose) Cn via the binding of manno-proteins to mannose receptors, DC-SIGN (Mansour et al., 2006), and FCyRII receptors (Syme et al., 2002) on the cell surface. Once inside the cell, mannoproteins are degraded in an endo-lysosomal compartment and then loaded onto MHC class II proteins to activate mannoprotein-specific T cells (Mansour et al., 2006).
