Antifungal Susceptibility

Zygomycetes have been considered for a long time as a homogenous group of fungi in respect to their antifungal susceptibility. Recent studies both in vitro and in animal models of zygomycosis have shown that the different species exhibited different susceptibility to antifungal drugs. Moreover, some of the new drugs recently marketed or still in development have shown potent activity against zygomycetes and some studies have explored the potential of antifungal combinations. Standardized techniques for in vitro susceptibility testing of filamentous fungi are now available and allow comparison between studies. Nevertheless, due to the limited number of available studies both in vitro and in vivo, the clinical significance of some of these preclinical data remain unclear and should be further evaluated.
