9.2.2.1 VLDL metabolism - the endogenous pathway

In contrast to the metabolism of chylomicrons, there is an endogenous pathway of lipoprotein metabolism in which triacylglycerol is distributed from the liver to other tissues. It is summarised in Fig. 9.3. VLDL particles are secreted by the liver. When secreted, they contain triacylglycerol, cholesteryl ester, apolipo-protein B100 and small amounts of apolipoproteins E and C. (See Box 9.1 for further description of these apolipoproteins.
