The thyroid gland weighs about 25 g and is made up of two lobes joined by a bridge, situated on either side of the trachea (windpipe) in the throat (Fig. 5.7). It has a rich blood supply. It is responsible for secretion both of the thyroid hormones themselves, and the protein, thyroglobulin, which carries them in the circulation.
